When should they start wearing them? What can we expect?

Orthodontics for children – when is the right time?

As a parent, you may be asking yourself: does my child really need braces? And if so, when should we start? We answer the most important questions here honestly and clearly.

When should you see an orthodontist?

We recommend an initial orthodontic check-up at around 6–7 years of age – when the first permanent teeth erupt. This does not mean that treatment will start immediately. However, there are malocclusions that can be detected early and treated easily, which would otherwise develop into a much bigger problem later on. These include, for example, crossbite, an upper jaw that is too narrow, or a pronounced overbite.

Early treatment: sense or nonsense?

Sometimes early treatment of the primary dentition or early mixed dentition is advisable – for example, to widen the jaw before all the permanent teeth are in place. This can make the subsequent main treatment shorter and easier. We will clarify whether this is the case for your child during the initial examination.

The main treatment: When and for how long?

Most children begin their main orthodontic treatment between the ages of 10 and 14, when most of their permanent teeth are in place and their jaws are still growing. This growth phase is an advantage: corrections are faster and gentler than in adults. The treatment usually lasts 12–24 months.

What can we as parents do?

The most important thing is to be consistent with appointments, brushing teeth, and keeping check-ups. Children who brush well and take care of their appliances have significantly shorter treatment times. At each appointment, we explain to you and your child exactly what to do—and why
