Orthodontics for children

When is the right time? When should they start wearing them? What can we expect?
As a parent, you may be asking yourself: does my child really need braces? And if so, when should we start? We answer the most important questions here honestly and clearly.

At what age should orthodontic treatment begin?
One of the most common questions we hear in our practice.

The short answer: earlier is often better – but not always necessary.
The Swiss Society of Orthodontics (SSO/SGK) recommends an initial orthodontic examination at around six to seven years of age. This is the age when teeth start to change, and potential problems such as crowding, jaw development disorders, or habits (e.g., thumb sucking) can be detected early on.
An early examination does not necessarily mean immediate treatment. Often, a wait-and-see approach is the right strategy. However, if action is needed, children benefit from the fact that jaw growth is not yet complete and can be more easily influenced.

The main treatment: When and for how long?
Most children begin their main orthodontic treatment between the ages of 10 and 14, when most of their permanent teeth are in place and their jaws are still growing. This growth phase is an advantage: corrections are faster and gentler than in adults. The treatment usually lasts 12–24 months.

What can we as parents do?
The most important thing is to be consistent with appointments, brushing teeth, and keeping check-ups. Children who brush well and take care of their appliances have significantly shorter treatment times. At each appointment, we explain to you and your child exactly what to do—and why
